The experiment with the emptied glass dome seems to show clearly that sound uses air as a medium. But that still doesn't answer what sound actually is. Is it a movement of particles or waves? In the first century B.C. Titus Lucretius Carus argues that sound consists of particles, which can permeate through other bodies.
