The Inertial System Must Go!
Einstein, manuscript on the unified field theory, 1952, facsimile

The General Theory of Relativity unifies the forces of acceleration and gravitation and thus goes beyond the non-accelerated inertial systems of past physics. The unified field theory should achieve the same thing, as Einstein demands here – in contrast to quantum mechanics, which still operates with inertial systems. This is how Einstein justifies not basing his work on quantum mechanics.
