Compass
19th century

At the age of four or five, Albert receives a compass as a gift from his father. This simple instrument deeply impresses the little boy. He marvels at how the needle moves although he cannot recognize any cause for the movement. This sense of wonder will remain particularly important for Einstein his entire life, as the point of departure for contemplation and thus for science.
