Analyzing Metals: Blowpipe Instruments
1907

Blowpipe analysis is a quick method of investigating minerals by means of heating or melting and is especially useful on site in the field. The method, perfected in the nineteenth century, derives from the miniaturization of ore analysis techniques used in the laboratory.

By blowing air through the blowpipe into the flame of a burner it is possible to produce temperatures hot enough to melt, oxidize, or reduce a small grain of the mineral.
