S2, a Star in Narrow Orbit Around the Black Hole
In October 2002, an international team lead by MPI for Extraterrestrial Physics has directly observed a star, called S2, orbiting extremely close around black hole Sagittarius A* (central red cross). No event like this had ever been recorded. S2 is currently the closest star ever seen orbiting around the black hole. Its orbital period is just over 15 years.
