Einstein Turns His Back on German Intellectual Life
Einstein’s letter to Max von Laue of 7 June 1933, reproduction

Einstein asks his friend to strike his name from the membership lists of all German organizations.

Disappointed by their passive attitude toward persecution and expulsion by the National Socialists, with this letter he severs all connections to official intellectual life in Germany.

Yet the experiences he made in resigning from the Academy have shown him that such a step is the only way to spare his few remaining friends from difficulties.
