From Maxwell to Einstein
As long as only weak gravitational fields are considered - all gravitational fields in our solar system fall into that category - Einstein's general theory of relativity has a structure very similar to that of Maxwell's theory of electric and magnetic fields. Einstein's propagating disturbances, gravitational waves, are the analogue to the electromagnetic waves of Maxwell (see image above) - to light, radio waves, x-rays and infrared radiation.
