Early speculations
Already in 1801 the Berlin astronomer and geograph J.G. Soldner speculated that according to Newtons theory of gravity "light-particles" should be bent near a gravitational field of a mass.

However, the correct value of the deflection angle was predicted by Einstein in his theory of General Relativity. Even before it gained its ultimate form, he made himself notes in his Prager Notizbuch in 1912.
