On the Current State of Field Theory

In this article Einstein expounds the motivation and objectives of the research program on unified field theory. The key issue for Einstein here is the logical uniformity of all physical laws – because this expresses his fundamental demand on physics:

We not only want to know how nature is [...], but we also want to reach, if possible, a goal which may seem utopian and presumptuous, namely, to know why nature is such and not otherwise.
