Wolfgang Pauli, who is a leading light in the development of quantum mechanics at this time, criticizes (along with other colleagues) Einstein's mathematical approach in his work on the Unified Field Theory. He sends Einstein his condolences because he has joined the pure mathematicians. Just a few years earlier, Einstein had accused Herrmann Weyl of losing sight of physics in his Gauge Theory.
