How Do You Discover New Theories?
Einstein, manuscript for Spencer Lecture, Oxford, 10 June 1933, reproduction

Einstein disputes the idea that fundamental physics theories can be constructed from empirical data; they are always free creations of the human mind, and it is mathematical simplicity that shows researchers the way. However, the actual creative principle lies in mathematics. Only after a theory has been invented can facts be derived from it that can be empirically verified.
