Jolly's Experiment for Determining the Density of the Earth

Jolly extends his experiment for validating Newton's law of gravitation by placing a huge sphere made of lead under the lower scale of the balance in order to increase the gravitational force that attracts the weight.

The degree to which the weight increases indicates the relation between the masses of the sphere and of the Earth as a whole. Jolly thus determines the average density of the Earth as the 5.7fold of the density of water.
