Gilbert's Terrella
Model of the Earth as a magnet after William Gilbert, late eighteenth century

Gilbert founded modern geomagnetism around 1600. Geographical designations like equator, meridian, parallel and pole receive a new, geomagnetic definition. His model of the Earth, the Terrella (little Earth), is a spherical magnet.
