Barlow’s Sphere
Peter Barlow's Model of the Earth as an Electromagnet, C. Dell’Acqua, Milan, around 1840

After the discovery of induction, Peter Barlow criticizes the comparison of the Earth with a permanent magnet. His model of the Earth (around 1840) is a spherical coil with current flowing through it. Barlow believes that magnetism has no real existence.
