Inclination Compass
Instrument used to determine the deviation of the compass needle from the horizontal, Georg Friedrich Brander, around 1779
It has been known since the 16th century that the direction of the Earth’s magnetic field deviates from the horizon. Inclination compasses measuring this deviation complement declination compasses in drawing maps of the geomagnetic field.
