Einstein and Hilbert are in competition to formulate the field equations. Einstein admits that Hilbert has also found the right mathematical foundations. At the same time he points out that the difficulty actually lies in the physical interpretation of the equations. In Hilberts work the question about it's connection to Newton's theory remains open.
