The Goethe league of Berlin participates in the war propaganda by publishing an anthology in 1915, uniting authors who – in the words of the editor – “constitute the glory of the nation in this great and difficult time, and to whom we look with all the more pride, the more enemy nations exhaust themselves in powerless attempts to tear down our culture.” Einstein’s contribution does not fit in. The text, toned down for publication, is sarcastic and warns of the brutality of war.
