The Gas War
In early 1915, the German military decide to test and deploy chlorine gas on the warfront. The first deployment on 22 April 1915 at Ypres in Flanders is supervised personally by Einstein’s colleague and friend, the physical chemist Fritz Haber. Despite his pacifist convictions, Einstein never addresses Haber’s role in the development of such weapons.
