Stellarator - the elegant alternative

Other than with the Tokamak, the twisted magnetic field of the Stellarator, a prerequisite for plasma stability, is generated by a complex system of non-planar coils.

Advantage: there is no pulsed plasma current, thus the principle is qualified a priori for stationary operation.

The discharge duration depends only on the duration of heating and may be brought at acceptable effort from the range of seconds (Tokamak) into that of half an hour or more.

The largest and most advanced Stellarator worldwide, Wendelstein 7-X, is under construction in Greifswald.
