As a computational problem, the search for gravitational wave signals in the data produced by detectors has one great advantage: It can be distributed to several computers. As an example, the image on the left shows a view of the high performance computer cluster MERLIN used at the Max-Planck-Institute for Gravitational Physics to analyze data from the LIGO detectors and GEO 600. But even MERLIN as a cluster of 170 closely linked computers meets its limitations when faced with the task of looking for, say, periodic signals from neutron stars. That is why the researchers have started another project: Einstein@Home - gravitational waves for everyone.
