Pole Shoe and Specimen Gate of the DEEKO 100
Berlin, 1966

In order to achieve the highest possible magnification with the electron microscope, Ruska places the specimen in the middle of an electromagnetic lens. The upper half functions as a condensing lens and the other as the objective. Because a vacuum exists in the electron microscope, the specimen is introduced by means of a gate.
