Einstein Takes a Stand for the Freedom of Expression
Vossische Zeitung, 1 October 1925
The appeal “For the Freedom of Expression” appears on 1 October 1925 in the Vossische Zeitung. The authors lament the increase of trials against writers and actors and defend themselves from a “monitoring of attitudes” by the state. In addition to a number of interest groups, the appeal is signed by Albert Einstein, Alfred Döblin, Gerhart Hauptmann, Hermann Hesse, Käthe Kollwitz, Max Liebermann, Heinrich and Thomas Mann, Gustav Radbruch, Max Slevogt, Ernst Toller, Heinrich Zille and Stefan Zweig.
