Atmospheric effects

Electromagnetic waves propagate through a medium at different speeds, depending on their frequencies.

Similarly, dependent on the water vapour contents of the troposphere, radio waves will be slowed down at different strengths.

The electrical state of the ionosphere takes its effect on the speed of signal dispersion as well.

The resulting error can be estimated by the receiver if the satellite signals are simultaneously transmitted at two clearly different frequencies.
